Boat Castle (funa-gakoi) is a basic Static-Rook structure used against Ranging Rook. It is a starting platform for several plans, not a two-move gamble designed only for blitz.
Reference Shape
A common Sente reference has the King on 7h, the right Gold on 5h, and the left-side Gold and Silver near 6i and 7i. The exact arrangement changes when the position develops into a rapid attack, Left Mino, or Static-Rook Anaguma.
What It Provides
Boat Castle moves the King away from the Rook and gathers defenders without committing to a deep final castle. That flexibility is useful while you identify the opponent’s Ranging-Rook system.
What It Does Not Provide
The basic shape is not a fortress. Open Bishop diagonals, Rook transfers, and piece drops can become dangerous if you leave the King there after the position demands more safety.
Choose the Next Plan
Use the opponent’s attack speed to decide whether to launch a rapid attack from Boat Castle or invest in Left Mino, Anaguma, or another structure. There is no universal rule that a fuller castle always wins the endgame.
What This Reference Does and Does Not Show
The diagram isolates the defensive relationship: King 7h, Golds 5h and 6i, and Silver 7i, with the Rook remaining on 2h. Most Pawns and the Bishop are intentionally omitted. Because those pieces determine open files and diagonals, this board teaches identification, not a complete legal move order from the initial position.

Beginner Verification Routine
- Locate the King and Rook; confirm they are separated.
- Trace every open Rook and Bishop line toward 7h.
- List the opponent’s checks and captures before moving another defender.
- Choose rapid attack, Left Mino, or Anaguma only after that list.
The Japan Shogi Association’s beginner material presents Boat Castle as one pairing for Static Rook and rapid Silver development. It is an opening choice with continuations, not a claim that the displayed partial board is universally sufficient.
