Silver Crown (gin-kanmuri) is a Mino-family development that raises the Silver above the King. The higher structure improves some upper squares but requires time and can create new targets.
Reference Shape
For Sente, a common reference has King 2h, Silver 3g, Golds 4g and 5h, with Pawns helping control the second and third files. Variations depend on the opening and exchanged pieces.
When the Upgrade Helps
Silver Crown is attractive when the opponent is preparing attacks from above and you have enough quiet moves to complete the reorganization. It is less attractive when the transition itself allows a forcing attack.
What to Check Before Moving the Silver
- Does 3g need Pawn protection before the Silver arrives?
- Will moving a Gold leave a back-rank weakness?
- Can the opponent open the edge or sacrifice on the raised Silver?
Treat the diagram as a destination, not a command. Stop at High Mino when the position does not grant the required tempi.
Read the Exact Board, Not Only the Name
In this diagram, the Silver on 3g directly protects the King on 2h. It also controls the forward squares 2f, 3f, and 4f. The Gold on 4g supports 3f, 4f, 5f, 3g, 5g, and 4h, while the Gold on 5h covers the central side of the formation. These are observations about the displayed pieces; they do not prove that the castle is safe against every attack.
The Pawns on 1g, 2f, 3f, and 4f are part of this reference. Removing one can change a file or diagonal even when the King, Silver, and Golds remain on their named squares.

A correct answer can be to remain in High Mino. Castle development is a move-by-move decision, not a requirement to reach the deepest available shape.
